Understanding Your Pet's Needs

After my pet had a long, drawn-out battle with cancer, I realized that I needed to do a better job with understanding my pet's needs. I wanted to be there for them no matter what, so I started focusing on my other animals. They needed more love, attention, and medical care, so I focused on those things. I started taking them in for regular checkups and working on their physical appearance. I was able to spot a few other potentially catastrophic health conditions with my animals because of my actions. This blog is all about understanding your pet's needs.

Is Your Kitty Wheezing? 4 Effective Ways To Treat Feline Asthma

Gisele Pereira

If your cat has started wheezing, and it can't seem to get the energy it needs to romp around the yard. Chances are good that it might have asthma. The first thing you should do is schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. They'll be able to rule out other medical issues and provide the proper treatment for your feline friend. In addition to the treatment that your veterinarian will provide, here are four steps you can take to keep your cat comfortable.

Turn Up the Humidifier

If the air in your home is dry, your cat may have a more difficult time breathing properly. Dry air tends to irritate the airways, which can turn around and trigger an asthma attack. Bring out the humidifier and set it up in the room where your cat spends the most amount of time. On days when your cat's asthma seems to be particularly bad, set the humidifier up in a bedroom, bring your cat into the room and then shut the door.  Your cat will be able to rest comfortably during its in-home breathing treatment.

Kick the Habit

If you smoke indoors, you should kick the habit. Cigarette smoke can trigger asthma attacks in your cat. You might not realize this but cigarette smoke tends to drop towards the floor, instead of rising to the ceiling. Since your cat spends the majority of its time on the floor, it might be breathing in higher concentrations of the smoke. Help your cat breathe easier by smoking outdoors.

Switch Kitty Litter

If you're using ordinary cat box litter, the dust may be irritating your cat's lungs. With ordinary kitty litter, each time your cat scratches in the box, your cat will breathe in the dust that comes up. By switching to dust-free kitty litter, your cat will be able to breathe easier when it's using the litter box.

Change its Diet

If your cat is overweight, it might be working too hard to move around. That added weight around the middle can make it difficult for your cat to breathe properly. Talk to your veterinarian about starting your cat on a weight-loss program.

If your cat has asthma, here are some simple steps you can take to help get its breathing problems under control. Talk to your veterinarian about treatment options that are available for your cat. If your cat is coughing and you can't get it under control, you should take your cat to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
