Understanding Your Pet's Needs

After my pet had a long, drawn-out battle with cancer, I realized that I needed to do a better job with understanding my pet's needs. I wanted to be there for them no matter what, so I started focusing on my other animals. They needed more love, attention, and medical care, so I focused on those things. I started taking them in for regular checkups and working on their physical appearance. I was able to spot a few other potentially catastrophic health conditions with my animals because of my actions. This blog is all about understanding your pet's needs.

Three Tips For Caring For Your New Dog

Gisele Pereira

A puppy can be a wonderful addition to your family, but it is important to appreciate the various health needs that your new pet will have. Unfortunately, those that have never owned a dog may underestimate the importance of some of the more basic needs that a dog will have. To help you avoid making this mistake with your new pet, you can use the following few tips.

Keep Your Dog's Teeth Clean

It is easy to understand the importance of your own oral health, but you may assume that your dog's teeth will not really need any special care. However, your dog can encounter a number of the same problems that you can develop. For example, your dog can develop gum disease, cavities and oral infections. In addition to posing a direct risk to your dog's mouth, these issues can also lead to infections that spread to other areas of the body. You can minimize these risks by having your dog's teeth professionally cleaned each year and providing chew toys that are designed to clean the teeth.

Monitor The Weather

If your dog will be spending a lot of time outside, it is important for you to keep a close eye on the weather. Temperature extremes and severe weather can create both uncomfortable and dangerous conditions. When the temperature is expected to be hot, you need to make sure that you are providing your dog with extra water, and you may want to bring your dog inside during the hottest time of the day. To keep your pet safe during severe storms, you will need to bring your pet inside. This can help to avoid the threats posed by falling branches, flash flooding and lightning.

Keep Your Dog Protected Against Fleas And Worms

Fleas and worms can create potentially serious health problems for your pet. Fleas can carry diseases that can spread to your pet. Worms can also pose a serious threat as some types of worms can be potentially fatal to dogs, such as heartworms. Do not hesitate to go to an animal hospital if your puppy seems to have any serious problems with these types of diseases. However, you can avoid some of these diseases by administering periodic medication. For those that are concerned about the inconvenience of giving a pet monthly medication or are concerned that they will forget to regularly administer it, your veterinarian may be able to administer extended release worm and flea medications that can help to keep your pet safe against these common parasites. These extended release medications can last for several months, and your veterinarian may call to remind you when it is time for your pet to have these medications administered again.
